"Pompeii" is a Disaster film. Unfortunately, Vesuvius isn't the source of this disaster. It's the director, Paul W. S. Anderson. And while Mr. Anderson is clearly not James Cameron or Ridley Scott, it does appear that he watched a whole lot of "Titanic" and "Gladiator", because one could have a drinking game, chugging each time some trope lifted from one of those films is on display.
I do appreciate that a studio tried to make a film about Pompeii, but the budget seemingly did not go to a screenwriter, nor special effects. They would have been better suited to use at least some practical effects or build sets.
Otherwise great actors somehow also come off as corny. The interior sets, costume design, and choreography are very good.
I hope someone else will make another film about Pompeii someday as this is a part of history, filled with drama, tragedy, that should be told.
