Although “The Gray Man” was by no means a perfect film, I personally believe it does not deserve the aggressive criticism it has received. Here are my thoughts.
First of all, the script was notably flat and greatly hindered the viewer’s attachment to the film. The only phrase that I think can describe the quality of the characters’ lines is badass wannabe. To make matters worse, although the film is based on a book series, it does little to stray away from all of the action-spy movies that came before it; so I believe that the fact it is the successor of all of the James Bond and Mission Impossible movies has made the critics a little biased.
Furthermore, I have some specific complaints.
1. I believe that Regé-Jean Page and Jessica Henwick were miscast as the CIA directors, as they don’t provide a major intimidation factor and are largely limited by the movie’s shallow script.
2. Although this is nothing new, the jumping between distant locations was jarring and affected the movie’s pacing.
3. There was simply too much action sequences to the point where the film became predictably chaotic.
4. Lastly, I believe that the producers relied too heavily on the recognizability of the movie’s prominent actors and actresses, as there was nothing notably unique about “The Gray Man” and many celebrities were simply thrown in there as brief side characters.
All of this being said, I actually really enjoyed this movie. Don’t be fooled, I am a very particular type of movie viewer, as I often become too emotionally invested in the films I watch. Considering this, “The Gray Man” doesn’t delve too far into the personal lives of the characters, meaning that I was not very attached to any of them and was able to enjoy the movie with little anxiety. In addition, Chris Evans and Julia Butters gave their absolute all to this movie - not to say that the rest of the cast did poorly, but these two really gave their characters a touch of believability.
Overall, this movie is great for people looking to watch something that doesn’t involve much thinking or meticulously following the plot, and the settings and action scenes definitely make it adequately entertaining. I confidently give it four stars for these reasons.
