I agree with all of the one star reviews. I am a big fan of the book and I have seen the older versions of Little Women (1994 version is my favorite followed closely by the older Elizabeth Taylor version). I came away disappointed in the casting and telling of the story. Having Amy played as a young child and grown woman by the same actress was unsettling. As a young child Amy’s voice sounded much too mature – and too deep. It was so wrong. And if I remember correctly, Amy was very prissy in the book as a young child and also as an adult, the character in this film was rather, well bossy. This Amy was a bit rough around the edges.
Poor Laura Dern – what a waste of a great actress. I wish she had more to do – more screen time.
The Meg character looked younger than Jo March but Emma Watson is very talented and young looks aside she was very good. There seemed to be miscasting throughout the movie ( but I don’t think anyone will ever top Gabriel Byrne’s portrayal of Professor Friedrich Bhaer :-) )
I know the story very well and still it was confusing to be brought in during the middle of the novel. Why would they start there? And the way the flashbacks were presented was as if they were just cut & pasted into the story without rhyme or reason. No smooth lead in.
The 1994 version of Little Women is still my favorite and it has the most beautiful music in the background. It's a movie you'll love to watch again and again.
