K so I was not disappointed about the fears being deeper than “o no sneks and clowns” (except for one character), but it felt really cheesy. Don’t get me wrong, some parts were good, but I don’t understand how they could overcome some of these things the way they did. (Spoiler) If you were afraid that everyone was pretending to be your friend, and you explicitly recognize that there’s a possibility they’re lying to you, how does someone saying “but no tho” fix that? Like, maybe you’ll feel better for a few hours but the second they leave, you would think those fears would come right back.
Also this book made me do some research since two of the four/five main characters are gay. It’s fine, but that’s half the cast. I looked it up and only about 2-3 percent of the population at most is gay/bi at most. There are more military brats than that (4%). For every gay character, there should be two military brats. I want my representation! Give me my representation!
