I don't know where to start with this fairy tale. I must say American TV must be awful if Elizabeth's cooking show became a hit! As an old Brit, I found the US language very difficult to read. I had to keep looking up what certain words meant.
It was the chosen book for my reading group. We had read a superb book previously and the contrast was so marked. I almost didn't manage to read this one. I've never been to America but I have lived and worked through the late 50's and 60's in the UK and I never experienced any discrimination of any kind. Men were usually very polite and pleasant. I have had three children and taught loads more, some exceptionally bright, others not, but I certainly doubt whether any of them were like Mad. And the dog! For heaven's sake, if dogs were like that I might consider getting one. The 'gotten' thing drives me mad. Don't be lazy; replace it with a proper word. I doubt whether the religion thing is quite the same here, thank the Lord, but America does seem to be going down a dangerous route if it is as the book depicted.
I can't recommend this book and I don't like to write such a damning review. It is, after all, only MY opinion and there are plenty of positive reviews.
