I saw the preview and hit “Play” fast. I love these types of novel-based character-driven science fiction films. But I was very disappointed. It was dry, slow and boring at times. And suspense sections were thrown in with a predictable fashion.
I’m usually a fan of stories that break in two, but this film proves why they are best left to good writers. You had no time to connect with the characters. They tried to throw some nostalgia in there, but it didn’t help. You honestly don’t care about a single character. And don’t get me started on the science ball drops and the predictable “twist”.
I’ll say something good, however. The score was good. Not A1, as music was misplaced at times, but when it was good, it was good. I also loved some of the visuals like the breathtaking view of Jupiter from its moon.
Overall, they tried to make this film more emotionally gripping than it was and it came across as forced. If you’re a geek for science, you’ll roll your eyes at times. And if you love either character or action driven plots, skip this one because it misses both.
