Episodes are bloated with many scenes showing Jennifer's perma-furrowed brow. We get it, she's confused. Aisha Tyler is always great. I keep watching because I love the houseboat...I stuck around for Season 2 of Big Little Lies because of the real estate. I also love the bowls featured.
The story is low stakes for me 5-6 episodes in. Bailey leading by her whim, because....teenager...is tiresome. The shtick where she pauses and gazes upward as she relives buried memories while Hannah turns to her with furrowed brow is laughable. Seems like a lot of <insert unlock memory module here> when writing the screenplay.
The actor playing Bobby is doing his best, but he's too old for the role. I have kids in high school. No AsianAm high schooler looks like that. (Source: I once was an AsianAm high schooler) Plenty of appropriately aged Asian actors also needing a break. (See the difference between the 2 lead Asian actors in Disney's Chang Can Dunk--only 1 of them is high-school adjacentish and it somewhat shows, but still less distracting than this particular casting.)
Lastly, it perplexes me why all these people want to help our prickly protagonist—the AH ex, the high-powered friend and equally high-powered partner with demanding careers, the marshal with a conscience (who talks in riddles and pauses)—why??
* Also, want to concur with a previous review about the head-scratching choice to move the atty ex from a quiet kitchen to the windy balcony to take the call. If I didn't know better, I would have thought he was a real estate agent holding an open house.
