I am an avid fan of the series, Jurassic Park being both my favourite in the series, and my favourite film of all time.
I was excited for this film initially. The concept of going back to it's roots really got my hyped. Then as more info trickled out over time, and I saw more trailers, I just got more annoyed. Tonight I went and actually saw the film and I was, not only disappointed, but angry.
*SPOILERS*
The plot and setting is simple (needed to be after Dominion) and the acting is solid, lots of good action etc. That is where the positives end...
- The nostalgia 'nods' to the original films were, at first, cool. But after a while, I simply lost count. It was overkill to the point of offensive, and displayed a complete and utter lack of original ideas. Do your own thing for christs sake, stop rehashing the same ideas over and over. The only exception to this for me was the T-Rex raft scene which is taken right out of the original JP book and I loved that they put that in.
- The CGI and / or Dino models somehow managed to look worse than the original JP film. Awful.
- The plot, whilst straightforward, was so predictable it was borderline laughable
- The Hybrids. I am so sick of hybrids..dinosaurs are terrifying enough. Why on earth do we continue to be subjected to these 'things'. Somehow they reached a new height of awful in this film in the form of the Mutadon and the D-Rex, both of which looked utterly ridiculous and could just have easily been replaced with ACTUAL dinosaurs. The D Rex was barely in it either. Thank god, whoever signed off on that design needs to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror.
- Duncan's miraculous survival at the end without a scratch. I have no words.
I wanted to like this film, but I really do feel like it's the final nail in the coffin for me for this series..I'll stick to the original JP and LW and pretend the rest don't exist (to be fair I liked the first Jurassic World film) because it's just disappointment after disappointment.
P.S. the trailers collectively give you pretty much the entire film. There are zero surprises. This seems to be the modern trend and I hate it.
