I am still to understand why Marianne's mother behaves the way she behaves. Maybe it's the pity she feels towards her son i am not sure or just maybe the need to want to protect her son to not turn out to be the monster of the husband she married that physically abused her. Which is very strange because the son is already that monster that her husband was abusing her daughter and letting it happen instead of stopping it. I think it is the feeling of finding abuse being a norm or casual thing that makes Marianne think that she is going the right path by letting all these bad things happen to her.
From the desire to want to fit into the society and also having the need of just wanting to be in her own world and not wanting anybody but Conell in her life secretly, is what makes the storyline very interesting. It's like my mind was drawn between different minds of one person, someone who is very smart, intelligent in many ways in the eyes of other people and her friends but fails to take care of her mental, emotional state.
The story for me was very passionate and romantic but also showed the brutal side of family and society. It produced great knowledge of how one can easily be trapped in a dark space alone and seek some sort of light in wrong people and end up in wrong places. It portrayed the brilliant mind and very complicated lives of the two leading characters and how their worlds kept colliding every time they find some sort of comfort elsewhere and with other people. It showed the normal lives of two different people who one is in desperate need to do better and achieve his goals and build a career in difficult times as he is not from such a privilege background and be a better person, Conell. While having hope that he can be a better person and maybe make up for what he did to Marrienne in High school by ensuring that she is protected at all times and making sure she finds the right person who can maybe love her the way he does and show her the same affection he did, maybe someone he cannot be insecure with.
While, Marienne tries so hard to work through her studies, while seeking to find her sexual desires in every guy that she meets more like the same as the ones she encountered with Conell. At the same time, she tries to have a normal relationship with her family which is very distant and the brother who hates her and abuses her verbally and physically. She gets internally damaged to a point of thinking pain, name calling and abuse is a norm that she ended up wanting all that put included in her sex life and ended up dating a sedist. He brilliant and intelligent mind somehow has a way of getting her out of situations and do better for others but always fails to.do it for her self. We see a very strong, courageous young lady, who is very supportive and very smart but fails to mostly be strong for herself.
The show just shows a different script from the normal romance scripts that i am used to. There is no forever after, it is more of reality than just an act. When watching it, i connected with the characters and felt so much realistic features in every part of the show.
All in all the show was great to watch, and it really symbolises the life of most normal people. That as people we do not have it all but live to try each day to get what our heart's desire but life just gives us minimal instead.
