This is the best Godzilla movie I have ever seen.
It shows what Hollywood has always failed to get right- the human aspect of tragedy when met with an unstoppable being of mass destruction. A common complaint you will hear about western Godzilla movies goes something like "too much human stuff, I'm here to see Godzilla and epic monster fights!!". This is the reaction you get when the characters are bland fillers to the CGI-filled action sequences.
Godzilla Minus One was completely different. The action sequences with Godzilla were absolutely spectacular, and had me on the edge of my seat. But more importantly, this is the only Godzilla movie (besides maybe Shin Godzilla) I have seen which had me more deeply captivated in the human component for the entirety of the film. From the start to the end, it develops fleshed-out characters that you want to root for. The struggles of the main character, from the very first scene to their resolution in the end, are moving, because you can see yourself in him.
This movie will break your heart at times, while filling you with unparalleled hope at others. This was the best movie to come out of 2023.
