For overall art and entertaining film, definitely four stars (not something I NEED to watch or WANT to watch again).
However, I find the writer and director’s gross negligence in properly accounting for ALL VICTIMS that day to be crude, irresponsible, and racist.
The fact that she glorified hate crimes as if age matters and because being white walking, jogging, or biking in Central Park is a crime. A crime for which a band of 30 juveniles were justly given the right to discharge the punishment. Let us not forget these “kids” admitted to and willing participated or did nothing to stop or help SEVERAL victims that night- including another jogger, a bicyclist, and a person leaving a field “a bum” - according to them.
I also wonder why she never included reports from TWO DOCTORS (one a surgeon- whom by the way she interviewed for over a day) who treated the jogger that was raped and BOTH confirmed that more than one participant was involved.
I also wonder why it was conveniently left out that several of her “victims” had semen found on their clothing as well as inside their underwear, along with blood spatter, that did not match their own, found on their shirts, pants, and shoes.
And also, why did she forget that our grand martyr of the story.... the one who found God and decided to tell the police he acted alone (only after the statue of limitation ran out) ... was running with the pack that night and that Wise is the one in his confession that also stated there was a pink Walk-Man.... emmmm what - you didn’t hear that on his taper confession? How did the cops coerce Wise to say that when they didn’t even know that fact at the time because the victim was almost dead?
Lastly, there were blatant lies about Wise just going to the police station to be moral support for Yusef. Emmmm does any one not know how to read. There were actual warrants out to bring them in to be questioned because they *BOTH* were named in several assaults that night by MANY OTHER participants!
There were actually *SIX* boys charged for the rape, but ONE NEVER CONFESSED TO ANY THING AND HE DID NOT HAVE AN ATTORNEY PRESENT EITHER!!!
So many inaccuracies for which can be done with a google search. I love how this all revolves around a racist white man who is up for re-election next year. Because you see - according to this director, it was okay for Donald Trump to be a racist in the 80’s, but not the year before his RE-election. There is also a YouTube video with Korey Wise and Yusef being interviewed about the movie, where Korey ADMITS he didn’t even know about DT taking out an advertisement calling “to bring the death penalty” back to any race, color, or gender of person who viciously attack people in a park because they can......
And shame on Oprah Winfrey.... glorifying this as well... I wonder who really keeps racism alive and well....
