In 2004, I saw โThe Passion of the Christ.โ My wife and then two-year-old son were not home that weekend and I went alone. I walked out of the theatre moved, numb (in a good way), and most everyone else who did walked out somber and silent.
The recent โJesus Revolutionโ film has been all the rave. I have seen it. It was inspirational. However, the film I saw, which I encourage people to see, is โHis Only Son.โ Not since โThe Passion of the Christโ have I had a film evoke such emotions inside me. It is not many films that bring me to tears, but โHis Only Sonโ did.
The story tells of Abraham and Isaac and Godโs command to Abraham to offer his only son to Him as a burnt offering sacrifice. The deeply religious conflicted Abraham sets off on his journey to Moriah to carry out Godโs command with Isaac and two servantsโฆbut there is much more.
This is not the Sunday School version we learned about Abraham. The film shows the humanity of Abram and Sarai. It shows how they try to cling to their faith after their move to Canaan. Saraiโs pain of the inability to give Abram a child and the pain of being motherless is portrayed with devastating believability than any Sunday School book ever did.
When God makes His covenant with Abram and tells him that he will be the father of many and that he will now go by Abraham and Sarai by Sarah things change. Isaacโs birth brings them both great joy. The movie is interspersed with scenes of his journey to Moriah with the events of the past leading up to this ultimate test.
