If you think this is a Pokemon clone, you're SO wrong. The only similarity is that both games have monster fights, other than that they're far from similar. To start, you couldn't breed Pokemon on its first generation, but on Dragon Quest Monsters I'd say that this is its core mechanic. Breeding is not only suggested, but highly recommended if you wanna beat optional bosses and sidequests, and it is the main factor that increases its replayability. It's guaranteed that you'll never have the same experience of the game twice.
And now, if I may give you the best suggestion, try out "Dragon Quest Monsters: Delocalized" (which you can find on RomHacking dot net)
The original Dragon Warrior Monsters localization is one of the poorest done official translations in the DQ series, being rife with translation errors, having extensive spelling, grammar, and punctuation issues, phrases that didn’t make any sense, a vast amount of missing humor and main-series references, as well as the typical kinds of censorship that were standard for that era. This project includes a thorough retranslation straight from the Japanese, where every line of text has been meticulously reviewed.
