Love the comments, but you are all missing so much..
It's a middle aged man coming to terms with his aging, his secondary carnal desires, and his growing self-awareness, in conflict with the mundane social norms of his times - and his thoughts about his belief system (his societal system and his questioning of god) being reviewed at it's most fundamentalist level.
The further he delves, the more conflicted he feels about a 'surface' life he tried to fit in with (with coffee spoons and small talk), and his growing self-awareness and how they conflicted with his yearing for greater truth amid this scuttling (good and carnal) and the conflicted elevated thought that this brings fourth and how easy it is to regress? What are we truly here for?
What is the point of life? Is there meaning? Is there a great beyond? Is my hair getting thin? Let me comb it in a different way to hide the 'spot' of my age...Should I just 'roll' my deeper thoughts about the true meaning of life into a 'ball' and forget about it? Just roll away?
That would be easier...
Was he really yearning for 'truth' back then?........
My take; this is just a mirror image for us all. Spend time reading each line like you were looking into the eyes of the author.
Reflect, and relate it to your own lives.
Only then, will you 'get it'.
By the way, he is not the one at the bottom of the sea anymore...
We are.
When one or all of us get's caught up in societal norms and lives only on the 'surface' of shallow thoughts and means, we miss out on the true, deeper, meaning of life.
And in turn, end up never truly seeing the light, as we scuttle around at the bottom.
The author's point is: If and when we truly wake up and figure out where we are, we drown...life would then seem meaningless. Unless our thoughts about life, society, and our beliefs are a little upside down..
Then....a love song can be also a warning song...
We are meant to figure it out, hold our breath, and reach the surface of our self-awareness.
The author is passing on knowledge, after an unfulfilled 'surface' led life he is now trying to fulfill with deeper meaning at the end.
He is too late.
Use the knowledge.
Till human voices wake us, and we drown...
Human voices.
