I read Maximum Ride and was so excited to watch the movie, this book series really impacted me and it's still my favorite to this day. I had heard that the movie was subpar but who cares, right? I wanted to see for myself and form my own opinion, and I figured that I would still like the movie even if there were some inaccuracies.
I. Was. WRONG.
I cannot begin to describe how HORRIFIC this movie portrayed the first book of the series. I have never seen such bland acting in my life, and the characters don't even look accurate to the books. While I watched I just kept thinking how much older Nudge looked than Max. She's supposed to be 11-12 but in this movie she looks like she's in her thirties and acts like a bratty, moody teenager! It made her extremely unlikeable.
I don't even want to mention how poorly they portrayed Fang and Iggy. Fang's name was not said ONCE this entire movie. Not to mention that the way Fang looks is completely inaccurate to the books. Fang is supposed to be lanky with long black hair, and they made him look like he could've been straight out of Teen Wolf. I was severely disappointed by him. It felt like Iggy was also greatly pushed to the side as a character, and nobody would be able to tell that he's blind.
The animation was one of the most disappointing parts of this movie. I understand how much work was probably put into this. However, I was so excited to see the characters and all of their unique wings but in this movie, the wings all look almost the same. In the books, Fang's wings are described to be "so dark they're almost iridescent", and yet in this movie they were a sad, grayish-brown color.
Overall, I was sorely disappointed. The casting, the acting, and the animation in this movie did not do this amazing book series justice. To anybody considering watching this movie because you love the books, just don't. You could honestly probably create a better movie in your head as you read along to what ACTUALLY happens in the book.
