Quite honestly terrible.
I wanted to love this book so much. But unfortunately it has become a running joke for about a year now with many of my friends (we periodically read the last few chapters and laugh about them, and not in a “this book is so funny” way<3) The author has fan fiction writing and the book is trying to be quirky but falling flat on its face. The entire book is such a basic fantasy trope and incredibly predictable. I feel absolutely no attachment to any of the characters and if they all died on the very last page of the book I would not have a single opinion on it.
This is one of those books where the author thinks they can get away with their mediocre writing by pretending it’s quirky and supposed to be a book that doesn’t take itself seriously. The characters are self aware which is supposed to be funny but it is executed poorly and just makes them extremely shallow, the romance (which by the way is the entire point of the book) has terrible development and the ending… well it was just awful and made me make a very distressed face as I was trying to understand what the author was thinking. The book is trying to be cheesy in a silly way that makes the reader’s laugh but instead it’s just cheesy in a way that makes the reader wonder if the author has ever written before.
So any way it was a complete waste of my time and the fact that it’s being compared to carry on has me extremely confused because I would rather locked in a room and forced to read one hundred books of Simon and Baz doing the same plot over and over in Rainbow Rowell’s writing than read this book ever again.
