The Deliverance starts off fairly promising, with a new slant (dash of social realism) for horror films thrown in. Glenn Close (by far the best performance) does a showy turn as the main character's mother. Sadly, it's all downhill after the second half. The pacing very quickly picks up, and it descends into what can only be described as a pastiche of just about every horror movie ever created, topped-off with some very patchy performances from, for example, the exorcist preacher (why on earth does she turn up like Missy Elliot to perform the exorcism?). Mo'Nique is underused, and just plain annoying as the bolshie social worker, and is allowed about 2 minutes to do some real acting lamenting the loss of her own child. I laughed through many of the scenes that were supposed to be either chilling or scary. And this was based (very loosely I imagine) on a true story?
