It is indeed a work of art, nonetheless Evan Dorkin's self loathing and toxic emotions are splattered all over this work leaving the reader high and dry in an emotionless pit, at least it did to me and it was the same for some other fans I got to talk with recently.
The portrayal of toxic fans is exquisite and we all know the Eltingville Club boys were made to be hated but Dorkin forgot something fundamental in character creation, the more flaws a character has, the more human it becomes, and it will end up being more relatable to the audience. I absolutely fell for Bill’s character and willpower in “The Intervention” though it was not something to look up to I understood and analyzed the whole situation and it doesn’t stop being good, great, but why all that hate? Why all that spite just for doing something you love and judging others for not doing it “correctly”?
Isn’t it ironic how Evan scolds us into not becoming like the boys as if he’s a great role model by writing something from hate? Hate doesn’t take you anywhere and it shows. I’ve been on a depressive relapse for months after reading the Eltingville Club and analyzing my feelings towards it as well as the characters, setting, age, author and possible thoughts on everything surrounding this experience.
I love the characters, not as people to look up to but for what they are, abandoned kids in their own fantasy world where nothing can hurt them but the same hate inside them, hate forced to be there by their author. Days pass and I can’t hep but feel bad for them wishing I could do something to change the story, but I somewhat respect Evan’s decision on their ending.
Don’t even bother on writing to Evan Dorkin on X or Instagram, you’ll get a lazy, ambiguous, or passive aggressive response from his part.
I have mixed feelings on Eltingville that I’m working on understanding with all my heart but as the months pass I’ve made my decision. If you plan to read this comic book I’m going to tell you; You’ll never be the same afterwards, some are lucky ones who didn’t cry or got depressed afterwards but for the new fans it’s hard, it’s gonna be hard, think twice before giving a chance to this raw but still awfully intense masterpiece.
