Update: it’s in balance decent with Sauron being excellent. Adar is an also really good. Numenor is ok but the characters are not really appealing. Khazad dum is spectacular but the acting is wooden and unrelatable so far (probably redeemable) and to be frank I don’t care much what happens to those characters.
However the individual that wrote the Tom Bombadil scenes should be fired today. Some of the worst writing in any show or movie. It is cynical, lazy, incompetent writing. There is no excuse it’s just excrement. You are paid enough do your job.
Original review
It is ok so far, the Harfoots are a bit overdone and why an IRISH tone.
Galadriel is a bit overdone too, BUT it makes sense of her statements about the long defeat, she just seems a bit too young adult for a 3000 year old. Elrond grates a bit too, but that seems intentional and willing to accept that may be plot driven.
The rest is good, the suspicion between elves and men is explained, the condensing of the timeline of Numenor makes sense and the world does seem younger and more wild than LoTR.
The plot lines that are building make sense but episode 1 and 2 were a bit slow due to world building.
Episode 3 was patchy, some bits were excellent, eg Halbrand’s fight, the depiction of the darkening nature of numenor, and the vague but building threat.
as a huge Tolkien fan I am cautiously optimistic.
Up to episode 6 now. The writing and the lack of gratuitous action is refreshing, ok it isn’t accurate to Tolkien but the “feel” is probably closer than the films. Yes it is not the same as Tolkien’s writing but it is recognisably the same world. The more I see the more I like this adaptation of what is after all a work of fiction.
