The fight against racism forty years ago looks a lot like the same fight today in Steve McQueen's masterful film. What's so compelling about how McQueen chose to tell this story is that this isn't a "white man saves the world" situation. Yes, a white lawyer helps out in a court battle, but the actual fighting is done by black defendants, who show us passion, commitment and eloquence in equal measure. Superb!

The first half hour of the film has almost no dialogue. It's a story that begins visually. Then you're thrown into a revenge thriller where the avenger isn't too great at his job. Things get messy. The light at the end of the tunnel is a train comin' at you. This is all presented with a sharp eye for detail, an atmosphere of quirky dread. I loved it!

As a fan of cleverness I was bound to like this movie. The screenplay is quite clever. You've got a bunch of fine character actors from the era here and they're given a chance to let loose. Loads of fun, with a believable twist. This is one of the best under-the-radar Westerns ever made.

I'm giving this film two stars because it does contain some great visuals. But the story doesn't cut it. Sorry, but scientists are supposed to be smarter than me and the scientists in this movie aren't. They make a bunch of mistakes I wouldn't have made. And I ain't no genius.

Tight little number that is either a science fiction movie or a film about a talented huckster. You won't know which it is until it comes to its end. Brit Marling is luminous as the leader of a small cult she's built around herself. Is she for real? She seems real, but you don't quite trust her. This baby will keep you guessing.

A nicely executed low budget alien-invasion road picture. The two leads, a scruffily charismatic guy and a pretty rich girl, are compelling and commit to the material. You end up caring about them. The special effects budget was used wisely, you buy the Monsters. The filmmakers pack in a lot of fun and excitement, even a little wistful beauty, considering the limited amount of money they had to spend.

A joyous celebration of life, love and cinema. Clever nuances abound. Every shot would look good framed on your wall. There's more imagination in this film than in any ten Hollywood blockbusters. It's a perfect confection, sweet as a summer strawberry, light as air and moving in a way that puts a wistful smile on your face. This baby is about as good as films get.

This film begins with a compelling mystery and gradually takes a deep dive into the human experience. Numerous stories are bound together by the past as secrets in a small Texas border town are revealed after a shallow grave is found in the desert. What we have here is a beautifully realized epic. Yeah, it all takes place in a small town, but the themes this film examines are universal.
