I was confused how anyone could rate this one star but after reading some of them its just people missing the point which is a shame. This movie is meant to be absolutely devastating and it does that beautifully. Seeing children sick, misplaced, and dying is supposed to make you sad and angry. This film doing just that means it served its purpose well.
For those that are upset at Japan being framed as the victims, Japan was made up of 72 million people before World War II. Countries are not a single being. We refer to them that way but there are millions of innocents caught in the crossfire of war whether their country was the instigator or not. This film is a commentary on how every war takes innocent lives in the process. Resenting an entire country of people for the choices of their government is foolish. I would think us Americans could understand that now more than ever.
This movie has stuck with me for so long. Takahata did a fantastic job conveying that message. We'd be a more caring world if we took the time to understand what he was saying.
