The film is lacking important narrative lines from the Remarque novel. The training and antagonistic drill sergeant scenes are missing. The death of Paul's friends whilst gruesome, lack the sustained pathos of the novel. The cinematography and scale is impressive but the desperation and futility of war is lacking. It's worth a look but I was disappointed by the portrayal of Kat and felt the perspective of Paul was weakened in this version of the film.
