A wake-up call to the systemic devastation of the oceans by commercial trawlers. But what makes this documentary compelling is Ali Tabrizi’s skill in exposing the conflicts of interest and greenwashing by so-called marine conservation groups, some of them directly paid by the fishing industry. “Sustainable” and “dolphin friendly” are meaningless labels widely used to justify the sale of tuna, which cannot be caught without “by catch”, a euphemism for the daily killing of thousands of whales, dolphins and turtles. By 2050 most of the large fish and marine mammals will be gone, or on the brink of extinction, absent corrective measures. The good news: it’s not too late to reverse course.
