My goodness. A shining example of The truth and realities of being human: female and male, family, love, loss are all captured so beautifully in this version directed skillfully by Greta Gerwig.
I remember reading this treasure while visiting my grandparents in Ft Valley, Ga, the summer before my 5th grade year… laughing out loud, swooning as the girls fell in love… feeling so much like Jo in those days of women’s lib - 1971. Not fitting in & not really wanting to, but watching the world know quite not what to do with me. Jo gave me permission to stand boldly as a smart Black girl who dreamt of being a doctor - as a fait accompli - not a pipe dream. I remember haltingly reading the chapter where Beth dies. Just loving the way the sisters loved her & not wanting to watch them suffer.
What struck me most in this version was MARMEE, the unselfish angel - clearly THE PROVERBS 31 WOMAN. She said out loud That she still spent so much of her day being angry, and just turning herself over to the love of God over and over and over.
It was impactful to hear her say that… and after 50 years, it really wasn’t any easier for her… to watch her sacrificing herself at every turn… & teaching her daughters to do the same.
In summary, this story is about living a perfectly imperfect life - well-loved.
I’m so glad I purchased it.
Along with THE MATRIX & Ang’s version of PRIDE & PREJUDICE, this is one I can’t wait to watch over & over again.
Brava!! ❤️🩹
