Always with these war films the story does not follow reality too closely. The taking of Pegasus bridge (Orne canal bridge) according to Major John Howard and many others the attack happen quickly without any heavy fighting and very few casualties. It is a little disappointing the directors chose to turn a deaf ear when being advised to what really happened in the early hours of the 6th of June '44. Richard Todd and Major John Howard where present at original attack and Todd went on to play Howard in the film.
None of the errors made during Operation Overlord where shown in the film. Due to the strong winds and rough sea most Paratroopers found them selves many miles away from the drop zones and landing craft on Omaha beach landed some 2 miles east of there designated landing zone.
The film is a little too Hollywood polished and those American frogs croaking in every scene with a few inches of water are a bit much!
