The negative reviews couldn't be more wrong. The movie is a masterpiece of subtle but devastating cinematic storytelling. Schrader is interested in the ideas of redemption but never makes it easy for his central character or his audience. Tiffany Haddish's breakout dramatic role is nothing short of extraordinary and of course Oscar Isaac delivers another deeply committed performance. When it comes to filmmaking, Paul Schrader is a national treasure.
