Les Miserables is by far the best and most profound book I have read in my life of 71 years. I have read thousands of books, but this is head and shoulders above all the rest. I first read it at age 13 and have read it about 15 times since then. Each time, I get more out of Hugo's words, descriptions, and philosophizing than the last time! It is a great mystery, a great drama, and most of all, a great love story even though Jean Valjean never experiences what we would call romantic love. His love for Fantine, Cosette, and Marius is very deep. Believe it or not, he might event experience love for Javert........is it possible to love someone whose life's intent is to return you to prison? If you have not read this book, please do so --- I implore you to read it slowly and carefully -- and then read it again! It will profoundly affect you, I promise. It took Victor Hugo 20 years to get this story right --- and he did certainly did get it right!
