Okay at the time of posting this it is 4:48am.
I won’t lie, like many other reviews here, it is a story that has taken a different turn from where we last left our favourite fantasy world. Much more adult themed, the plot does drag in places and even I’ll admit it took me a bit of time to finish a book from the beloved Brent Weeks that I would normally binge in a day or two.
BUT
It found its stride. It began to show its quirk.
For the first time in 15 years since finishing the last night Angel Trilogy novels, I have stayed up until 4 in the morning to complete a book (and on a work night too, old age has found me).
The amount of world building and setup introduced is astounding. I am peeved to see it end on a cliffhanger (bring back 3 novels in 6 months) but I’m excited by the prospect that for the next book we have so many new characters journeys to follow (and the hinted return of some old ones).
You might get 200 pages in, roll your eyes a little and question it a little, but once it finds its pace you won’t regret it.
