FIRE and WATER by FREE...
Although fairly young, these musicians were extremely talented and they actually headlined the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. The band was formed in 1968.
At the time of this release, FREE'S third album (June 23,1970) the members of the band (only the members that are on this release), their musical duty(s), and their ages were:
Simon Kirke: Drums... 20 years old.
Paul Kossoff: Lead guitar...19 years old.
Andy Frasier: Bass guitar and writer...17 years old.
Paul Rogers: Lead vocalist...20 years old.
(Just think how young these guys were in 1968 when they started the band!)
OK..Here we go....
Good day(or night depending on where you happen to be) to you. Although I don't particularly like placing a 1-5 Star rating on an album that I'm not all that familiar with, I'll go ahead and attempt to do just that after my *first listen of this L.P.It's so nice listening to Fire and Water on vinyl.
So far listening to side #1 I notice there aren't any of the lengthy lead guitar solos that one would expect to hear from music that came out in those days. Being primarily a blues-type guitarist myself, I listen for great solos...but as I listen to this L.P.I think what I'm hearing is the fabulous voice of Paul Rogers taking the place of lead instead of guitar...I'll find out as I go through side #2 which I'm beginning right now...but first a quick word on my favorite track of side #1...that would be Heavy Load.......here are the lyrics:
Just a young man
By an old road
By the route he choose.
An ancient song
In an old tongue
For this man was sung.
Oh I'm carrying a heavy load
Can't go no further down this long road
It's a heavy load...
By a bright stream
Came an old dream
Things are never what they always seem
And so he went on
Travelling on
Now he's a long way from home
CHORUS:
Oh I'm carrying a heavy load
Can't go no further down this long road
It's a heavy load...
(CHORUS repeated 4 times)
Side #2.
Mr.Big written by all four members of the band is a real nice song. Paul Rogers gives some of his very best vocalizings on this one and the lead is pretty long for a change. And the bass gets into the action! The lyrics are intense but fun!
All I have to say about Don't Say You Love Me is that it is an absolutely beautiful blues type ballad and done extremely well by Paul Rogers and all the guys....here are a little bit of the lyrics:
Time has told me what I need to know
Time has showed me now what love is for
The last track that most of us are familiar with is All Right Now.A great song that I don't need to say much about.
I'll rate this gem a four-star but if I sit and listened to it about a hundred times..I'm sure that rating would go up to a five. God bless.
* I listened to so much music during the 1968-70+ years that I might have heard this LP before.
