Musically, People Move On, was one of the best records of the 90s, arguably superior to Butler’s masterpiece Dog Man Star. However, as Butler himself now admits, he was still a novice vocalist and lyricist and the album didn’t quite achieve the same dizzy heights as his work with Suede & McAlmont. Twenty-five years later Butler has done something remarkable, he has become a better lyricist than either of his former collaborators. His vocals have improved markedly too, at times channelling a surprisingly theatrical quality that suits music which is by turns delicate and dramatic. A triumph.
