First, let me say that I love ANY kind of Sci-Fi and so few good shows ever see the light of day lately that I was thrilled to hear Katee doing another Sci-Fi show after Battle Star Galactica. That show set the bar extremely high in both plot, acting and production design for its time.
In theory, this show has a lot to offer and with the Sci-Fi street cred that Katee brings to the set, it should be amazing....unfortunately, it's not.
Even discounting the fact that apparently the cast of 'glee' has now been tasked with operating a starship ( an honestly, thats insulting to the cast of glee ) and overlooking the fact that a large curl, spiral Baliage is apparently now a NASA approved hairstyle along with the Jimmy Coo heels, that magically avoid getting caught in the myriad of space related machinery on board and ignoring the fact that a starship capable of even close to light speed apparently still uses plumbing from the 1960's in the engine room, we are still asked to suspend our sense of disbelief long enough to except that the very best that mankind has to offer in saving the planet, have the emotional capacity of a butt hurt blogger responding to a Twitter rant.
Katee brings her credibility and emotional complexity to every scene and there are some truly standout performances scattered throughout the episodes but, they are so inconsistent and the writing is so contrived, and at times, outright cringeworthy, that you have to wonder who's the Hollywood/Netflix insider that "just wants to Direct"?
As humorously bad as this first appears, the real danger is that there are boys and girls out there that are Sci-Fi fans and do look up to what pop culture offers up for both role models and career choices. Season 1 is insulting to both.
Don't misunderstand me, I want this series to succeed and I think we desperately need the wonderfully open and creative canvas that Netflix is helping to pioneer. I am hoping that Season 2 addresses many of the things that make it so hard to believe in Another Life.
