2 hours of trying to convince people that an unlikable child rapist pretending to be mentally ill to escape the prison is a martyr whose constant attacks against nurse Ratched are justified because she is supposedly the villain. Not to be mistaken, she is flawed, her methods even more so. But if the film is trying to convince the audience that solution to a boy being terrified of confessing his feelings to someone is sleeping with a prostitute and social oppression is to be fought by drinking, violence and overall disruptive behavior, that's just a little sad, isn't it? Instead of thoughtful commentary how institutions control people's lives, we get a movie trying to make us sympathize with a convicted criminal whose misogyny and racism are left unaddressed. The only saving grace is Louise Fletcher who is on another level as Ratched. Nuanced, not over the top like other characters *cough cough* Nicholson. 30%
