I am appalled by the negative reviews, but not surprised. Every single item criticised, I mean every single one of them, was either not true, or it was misunderstood. Let me name a few, in no particular order:
- too many scenes filmed in the dark: False. They were not really predominant. There are pleanty of scenes in day light, in brilliant colors. Then guess what: life happens at night also; and it also happens indoors. In case you didn't know, back then there weren't any LED lights. One simple fix:adjust your settings or get a better quality TV.
- David Oyelowo "is mumbling", hard to understand: False. You have a problem. Get hearing aids. If this isn't enough, get subtitles and be quiet, or ...shut your mouth.
- one of the worse comments, plain out racist and crossing the line deep into the stupidity territory: the show is too much about black people: whatch Roseanne to get comfy and continue living your misearble lives in real darknes and ignorance. Not to mention, half of the characters are white.
- Bass Reeves is not played by an american black actor: True, but not relevant. Maybe it's time to educate yourselves in what "casting" means in cinematography and how competitive getting a lead role is.
- the David Oyelowo's accent is not a real southern accent: Really? Hello!!! He is a British actor. I think he did pretty darn well. Get over it and attempt to stimulate your brain by trying to understand the more important things the show has to offer.
- oh, this one made my top 3: the N word was not used, or not used enough (as it was back then). False. Try watchimng the show again before getting drunk and falling asleep. Maybe you will catch this detail that you so much crave for.
- Bass Reeves' face is always perfectly clean shaved: False. Watch again. Then, are you really so ignorant? Old fashion razors were around long before those times. Dive in the history of razors a little bit. Recommended to do it in one of your rare moments of soberness.
- I like this one: the mattress was too clean, like new. It's obvious that the concept of having clean bed sheets and mattresses, even in times when there was no indoor plumbing, evades you. That's really smart to drop the show because the mattress was to clean, lol.
- a few criticized that the furniture was too modern for those times. False. I'm speechless. No comment here.
- black folks just couldn't enter most establishments in those days without being kicked off, or worse. False. That depended most of the times on where they entered and who entered. Not relevant for the overall value of the show.
- some viewrs got sick (a few probably ended in the ER and one or two maybe even expired) for watching Dennis Quaid and Donald Sutherland and listening to their voices. What a trauma! Lucky me that I revere and take my hats off to both of them for their immense contribution to the art of cinematography. Keep going strong Dennis and Donald. You are living legends!
- boring, slow character development, falling asleep... . False. Poor souls... take your naping meds after, not before watching.
Excellent show, worth watching every second of it. Five stars across the board.
