This is a thrill and action packed movie. Car chases, guns, beatings, Russian, Jewish, Spanish mafia topped off with illegal cop. About 8-10 killings (lost count) and mutilations. Suspense and cut throat dealings at every turn. Nobody to trust. Baseball game fans memories were sprinkled in. Suspense from early on until the calm at the end. My favorite part was the cat that made it through with its tortured paw. If you like action, suspense, car chases, crashes, blood, killings you’ll like this movie. I focused on the cat’s survival and escape with the hero to see it through to the end.

Your Christmas or Mine?

I didn’t read the book. I did see the movie. Domestic violence in movies or books is not something I enjoy. But the hype about this story… well I was curious. I’ve worked in women’s shelters so I’m familiar with the many dimensions of this topic. Here it goes… I was disappointed because there were too many holes. The “accidents with Ryles” were masked well but it was confusing to not see it in real time. Gas lighting audience? The flashbacks toward the end of the movie showed what really happened. Maybe there was a reason to film this way …. an attempt at denial. For Lily to stay near Ryle during her pregnancy was reckless. To say “I want a divorce” right after the baby is born was reckless. To even think “it ends with us” by divorcing is magical thinking if you have shared custody of a child. It never really ends. It continues in different ways through co-parenting. I think this movie would work well on Netflix. Or, a more in depth series showing the real emotional trauma and upheaval of domestic violence to women and children. Maybe the book explained the dynamics more fully but I don’t plan to read it. I wonder if there were any advisors on Baldoni’s staff who had first hand knowledge of the many forms of domestic abuse and how it can psychologically harm partners and their children. Divorce may end the physical aspect. But the psychological aspect will continue.

I must be missing something. This movie was funded by someone for some reason. I don’t know what that might be. Watching it was like waiting for a train that never arrives, waiting for results of a test that you never get, ordering a meal that is never served. Every episode seemed to promise something yet delivered nothing. Maybe it’s just me. Expecting something to happen yet it just plods along. I was not alone in looking for water in this desert of a movie.

Sophia Vergara used a slow build and representation of a woman maneuvering her way up in a male dominated underworld. The lucrative drug trade. Back in the 70s and 80s this was monumental for a woman in most fields. They were not taken seriously and used for lesser work. She was intuitive, opportunistic, very serious and eventually dangerous. Vergara’s depiction of Griselda’s demeanor was like an animal stalking an opportunity then attacking viciously for survival. I was intrigued with the character’s rise to Godmother during the 70s snd 80s and the fear she instilled. I don’t condone drug trafficking or violence. There is a lot of brutal gore here. But Sophia Vergara made this series work with her depiction of Griselda. She deserves an award for her performance.
