(Spoiler alert) First off this book is a massive let down. Frustrating
Loved the beginning. Heard positive reviews and even a 10/10. This book had so much potential, could possibly even been drawn out to carry on into a series. The timeline seems to be set in early 19th century but is actually set well into the future, very well written. You follow a young and talented warrior on a journey of self discovery through his rigorous training with other side characters being introduced on the way, eg his mother, write upto about half way this book is well written and the story is very addictive.Loved it. Then about over half way the story turns so quickly into a very disappointing novel by the end. You are just left hanging on the words and story as if more is to come but nothing, The young warrior which you believe to be the substance and the main character is definitely not the main character, the main story you have been hungrily reading builds into what is leading into a young warrior about to fulfil some noble journey of conquest of war, nope that build up was just for nothing.
Its about the mother and father feelings of somewhat abusive upbringing from their parents and guilt and grief of what “she” is going through, what she should have and could have done but didn't. Its just nonsense of a story that had no meaning by the time you finish. Unfinished branches of storytelling. In the end its a story of traditional Japanese's family under the pressure and adhering thousands of years of cultural customs, and breaking the norm to live happily in tragic circumstances. Honestly no change would have beheld them had they not been attacked or there son died.
