The setup for the plot required the main character Mickey to behave in a way that was irrational and incongruent with the 'single mom' character setup. The author wanted me to believe that she would then outsmart her nemesis. I gave up in chapter 14 when a quick google check established i wasn't the only one struggling with this contorted premise.
