Frederick is the entire book. He is actually the only character ever. He. Five stars just because Frederick exists.
like... 3/3.5 stars for everything else. I'd say the middle of the book was the best. The start was mildly confusing because of the duelling time-skips, it was very distracting since I was trying to get to know the characters at the "beginning" rather than have to jump forward to them in the "present". The characters themselves are complex and decently written, although you can sense where some characters have lost the authors attention or care and then their writing ultimately slumps. The use of literary devices was gorgeous. The end was awful, not because it was tragic, but because it was rushed and seemingly written to raise a shock factor even through it was honestly disturbing to see a sudden onslaught of atrocities to tie off the story. You could do this if it makes sense to the plot, this however, felt unnecessary and honestly a little scary.
