I normally don’t write reviews for movies. This is actually the first review I’ve ever written, but this movie has forced my hand because of how horrendous it is. What happened to people’s ability to discern garbage from quality? I’m convinced those people who gave 5 star reviews to this have just not seen or heard good musicals OR people just don’t remember them. Have we seen Singing in the Rain? Have we seen West Side Story? Fiddler on the Roof? My Fair Lady? The Sound of Music? Wizard of Oz? The King and I? Are you about to tell me that the singing was good in this? The singing was abysmal. The writing was abysmal. The lyrics were abysmal. The acting is abysmal. The spanish is abysmal. The pacing is abysmal. The directing, the sound design, the cinematography, the cadence, the story, the characters…ALL GARBAGE. What is this movie even about? The movie starts with some head cartel leader asking a lawyer to help him with his process of transitioning into a woman which is highlighted with one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard in a movie that actually sings “penis to vaginaaaaaaa”. So okay, we’re gonna watch a movie about a trans ex-cartel leader experiencing the troubles of transitioning right? WRONG! Skip 4 years and we now are thrown into that ex-cartel leader being fully developed as a woman and meeting with the lawyer again to ask for help to reconnect with his family. So we’re gonna get a movie about the difficulty of personal identity and how it relates to the husband’s familial expectations right?? WRONG! We’re gonna start digging up mass graves and showcase Mexico as a country thats just made up of graves. So okay, now we have a movie about a cartel leader who has come to realize the consequences of their actions and the harm done right?? WRONG!! We now have a romance and a dumb song for 10mins between the cartel leader and a woman that you don’t care about. Okay so maybe we’ll continue that right, maybe see more of their relationship blossom? WRONG!! We’re gonna go back to family issues and have the cartel leader kidnapped by his wife who doesn’t know she kidnapped her husband because he’s a woman now and we’ll end it with an anticlimactic gunfight that results in a car crash that kills the ex-cartel leader. Then we’ll end it with a funeral procession for a reformed cartel leader and the whole town singing his or her praises even though he or she ordered the killing of numerous people and we forgive him/her because he dug them up and became trans?? This movie is not about anything. Its as if someone watched videos on Vice about Mexico and thought “that must be it then” and then made a movie. It showcases none of the culture of Mexico. None of Mexico City. None of the country of Mexico. None of the people of Mexico. None of the food, none of the colors, none of the garments, none of the architecture, none of the slang or nuance of the spanish language in Mexico. N O T H I N G. It showcases the worst parts of Mexico and does it in such a horrible way that its almost insulting that it tried. Wanna watch a movie based on the cartel? Then watch Sicario. Wanna watch a movie about Mexico? Then watch Roma or Y Tu Mama Tambien. Wanna watch a dogshit piece of film that no one should ever make and ever watch ever again? Then watch this
