A very suffocated but overwhelming sound to this one. Such isolation creates a unique thematic tone in the sound of its music. It is thus appropriate that the album expores themes of an everyday struggle, both personal and societal, against injustice. There are themes around anger at being labelled different and what that says about the society which makes such judgements.
Sometimes the album gravitates more to the hip hop influences of Pure with other moments giving the album a sort of dark electronic vibe from Us and Them. This combination of metal, industrial, hip-hop, and electronic influences is both rhythmic yet also foreboding like the slow endless march of time.
I can somewhat understand some complaints around the bass being a bit suffocated but that's the point of the album. Another issue is some people don't like the album cover finding it of cheap design. While I understand where those fans are coming from I still find the design fitting to the overall mission statement of Godflesh. I enjoyed this album a ton accessible but distant. Like one's relation to their own mind.
