Technically an excellent movie, but...but...it's just too clean for 1917. The trenches are painstakingly recreated, but again just too clean. The two main characters are a little limp, with one looking very well fed to have spent much time anywhere near the front line. Pans out like a Saving Private Ryan for World War One and I really wanted to care for the British soldiers on mission impossible, but ultimately just couldn't. The cinematography is truly first class, but there are just too many open fields and woodland that looked green and unscarred to be Northern France or Belgium at that time. Once you have seen Peter Jackson's classic restoration work of actual footage from the same period, 1917 just looks like an almost cheery imitation of, what was, a truly horrific world war.
