Metroid Prime was possibly the most hyped up old game that I had not yet played, and after loving peak of the series' design, Super Metroid, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it...But I'm gonna cut to the chase. Metroid Prime has one of the highest highs in the series and some of the lowest lows in the it at the same time, seriously. For every great moment, there's a slip up pretty much right after. The new power ups are pretty cool and the old ones are put into excellent use in 3D, the grapple beam in particular is very fun to use. However, for some of these power ups, they barely get usage. This comes out clear with the x-ray visor. On paper, it sounds cool but when you combine it with the fact that the world is so big and there are barely any places to use it and you don't know where to use it, using the x-ray visor can be frustrating to put in to use, especially during one of the parts in Phazon Mines to which at that point you've already forgotten about its existence so how would you even know to use it now? The Bosses and the Environments along with their relaxing and inventive music are the obvious highlights of the game. The spectacle of each boss is incredible and each one has a menacing presence, making all of them very intense along with being enjoyable. The environments are possibly even more believable than Super's, and combined with the amazing music they blow it out of the park. Phendra Drifts is the crown-jewel of these regions, delivering some of the best music in the game and astonishingly beautiful scenery. But how much of this game is bosses and admiring scenery? Nothing really compared to HOW MUCH EXCESSSIVE BACKTRACKING THERE IS. Oh got a power up? Cool, now go across the map and back to get to the next part of the game which will take you about 10 minutes each time. Despite popular opinion, Metroid has always been pretty tame with its backtracking but Metroid Prime takes it over the limit. And even though I am the kind of person who doesn't mind going places you've already been to, it gets REALLY bad when you have to find the stupid Chozo Artifacts. While Metroid Prime has a great way of making the world more believable with these backtracking moments, it ends up dropping the ball every time after the game was just picking up speed. I love it, I hate it. I love using the boost ball, I hate fighting the phantoms. I love the music, I hate the water sections. I far and away believe why people absolutely adore this game but sadly for me, I did not like as much as I would've thought. However, this game truly does a great job of transferring Metroid to 3D and putting its own little twist on things. As their first outing, Retro did an amazing job so I'll barely give this one a 7/10.
