Disappointing! From the opening shot, I knew I was in for trouble with this stage school saccharin melodrama which feels more like a musical than a pseudo-biopic. I would not be surprised at all if this hasn't been adapted from a draft play. The film was set against the backdrop of the troubles which they tried to relay through newspaper and radio but which, beyond the bookended, easy listening riot scenes, never felt as though it actually touched upon the story world. The story itself was paper thin and lacked any real conflict and drama. Though the whole thing had the air disney does sectarian, at least disney would have insisted on a fast paced and engaging storyline. Performances were tedious, sentimental with the exception of Caitrรญona Balfe, who gave it her all. If you want to see a film about the troubles, watch Daniel Day Lewis in The Boxer. Give this a miss.
