Iโm really surprised at the lack of great reviews for this one. I thought it was far more suspenseful, interesting, and heart wrenching than A Quiet Place. There is a great ensemble of characters and Sandra Bullock is on point. I found myself holding back tears a dozen times, and I donโt get all that emotional when watching movies. I went into this with no expectations so maybe thatโs why I really loved it. People who only want a blood and guts horror flick might be disappointed, because itโs more than that. People who want a thought piece will also be disappointed because it doesnโt take itself that seriously. I mean John Malkovich in a horror film? What do you expect? It has to be laughing at itself behind the curtain while so called film snobs are looking for a message in a freaking movie about the end of the world. I can be very choosy with my movies but I just donโt think horror films are at their best when they try too hard to be artsy and cerebral. They lose their luster and the adrenaline rush is no longer there.
Bird Box is very fast paced, and covers more plot points than most horror flicks, and does in a way that is never boring. I donโt know why people judge horror films based on believability of every detail. Itโs fiction, itโs not meant to be believable, so why bother? This was a perfect combination of tear jerker and adrenaline. Loved it. If you found a Quiet Place boring, you might like this one.
My husband and I both loved it and we never agree on movies. He likes action and thrillers heavy on plot with little substance. I like indies and drama with character development and interesting dialogue. This was a really good in-between that can satisfy people who have an open mind and can appreciate a movie without being a stick in the mud.
