'Laapataa Ladies' is a thorough mix of entertainment, awareness topped by a performance that's as close as it can get to a real life.
A great storyline that is well directed and well captured. And the movie had the most optimistic ending that gives hope of a new beginning. You would feel like watching more even as the titles scroll up.
It's really surprising that the movie covered so many aspects, all naturally woven into the story line... The societal hypocrisy behind the custom of ghunghat, the narrow outlook of a woman's role in family, how a woman's role is prescribed by the brought up at parents' place and how her identity is lost to the mundane role played at the in-laws' place, an ideal husband who fell in love with a wife in an arranged marriage within three days of marriage, the more common version of a husband who treats wife as a mere property and source of dowry, a lovely camraderie that is possible and necessary between the women of a house, the life of a farmer unaware of scientific approaches, importance of education of girls... All these and much more to list.
Just the scene of how the police handles the the uncouth husband is sufficient to make it worthwhile for you to watch the movie.
The characterization of Jaya, Phool, the old lady selling coffee at Pateela station, Phool's mother in-law, sister in-law together make an epitome of womanhood that the society should look upto.
A mere review would not be sufficient and might not even justify the quality of this movie. Wish this makes it to the Oscars.
In crux, the movie is like a delectable recipe that has gone perfect to the pinch of salt level. You would enjoy each morsel of it and crave for more when done.
