This author has a wonderful mind. She eats, sleeps and breathes word association. I think this attribute is fabulous and Dominique Liongson is clearly clever. I suggest that Dominique’s exposure to various English-speaking peoples has influenced her ability to see humour in how English can be played with. She even had fun with the title, which is memorable, and that’s what an author wants.
I confess though that I find few of her puns amusing. I’m not criticising the author here – it’s just that my mind doesn’t see the puns as humorous – to me they are simply clever. I feel that an explanation after each pun should not be necessary. It tells me that the reader can’t be trusted to see what the author can see. To be amusing, each pun should stand alone as a laughable play on words or double entendre.
Don’t take my word for it though. Read it yourself. This book is selling well, and I applaud Dominique Liongson for writing it.
