It's sweet and funny and has its own charms that really got me hooked. But I think the most striking was how they were able to share several issues rather than just the main concept of acceptance and belongingness. It shared relational concerns on family and friends, grief and guilt, bullies (I appreciate how they also shared the effect of cyberbullying as a cause for suicides), and on career (I noticed that kids these days are pressured on their studies to fulfill other people's dreams for them instead of pursuing studies to help them reach their dream). The best character for me though would be their teacher and how he pointed several lessons here on how we shouldn't be defined by our grades while emphasizing the importance of working hard and how we should also consider the feelings of others rather than making fun of their pain.
I also enjoyed how the writer/creator of this story showed how past challenges, when faced and responded with forgiveness and reflection, can surprisingly lead us to where we ought to be using our potential.
