Spoiler free review.
If there’s a directors cut, I want to see it. Atmosphere was perfect, but there’s definitely missing scenes.
Typical to a movie with Guillermo del Toro, the first 2/3’s of the movie was amazing, but the ending was a little weak. Would’ve been made better with the scenes it was obviously missing.
Story is excellently built with subtle, yet disturbing messaging. This is definitely a show-don’t-tell movie. So don’t listen to reviews of people who didn’t get it because they weren’t paying attention. Practical effects are a 10/10. Expectations were subverted a couple times. Best representation of a wendigo in film yet.
Overall movie messages felt a little stretched. A mix of the horrors of abuse, and environmental virtue signaling. Should’ve picked one, or the other, the abuse message was 100x more suspenseful, realistic, and scarier.
