The film opens without context: No mention of the Spacing Guild, what Spice means to space travel, The Sisterhood and their fear, etc. The acting went as well as it could with the limited script. It was as if just when a character would begin to explain their situation, END SCENE/ CUT. The film unravels as cliche : oh here is the bad guy, and the good guy is the underdog in need of help. Explosion Running Another explosion. Oh. A worm. Ok. The worms aren’t usually found in other stories/ films, but here again, not a lot of effort explaining why the Fremen worship the worms. Helicopter chase. More running. The only way we know the Baron is a bad guy is because…well he does stab the doc. Oh. Not a lot of backstory either about why/ how the doctors betrayal was SUCH a thing, Imperial Conditioning anyone? More running. And what about Rabban’s cousin ? I guess if they couldn’t get Sting to reprise the role, well, just forget that character. No mention of the name Usul… nada. Seriously , FOLDING SPACE IS HOW THEY TRAVEL. Sorry, what ? I enjoyed the cast. I hope part two is more enlightened.
