I loved the Netflix show and I know this is supposed to feel different yet the same, but I think the writing for Born Again is noticeably weak. So much of it is just stuff happening, barely any cause and effect.
I just finished the fourth episode and it was the most โMarvel/Disneyโ feeling one yet.so much was told, very little showed. It felt cliche in some scenes, and almost preachy in others. The couples therapy scenesโitโs painfully obvious that theyโre trying to get the audience to just buy stuff when we know damn well these characters would say and act differently.
Fisk would have never left Vanessa, and he keeps saying he โhad to leaveโ but Iโm still unsure as to why.
Why does white tigerโs niece act like sheโs so close to Matt when I canโt even remember if theyโve met before?
Why are we devoting time to a scene where Matt is being preached to about the plight of those who commit petty crime when heโs literally been lawyering all this time working criminal cases and taking on clients who canโt even afford a lawyer? It felt especially strange given the very next scene Matt is just flirting it up with some law lady to try to get this dude probation??
Every episode has felt somewhat episodic in that the plots donโt feel connected, again, just unfolding simultaneously. Meanwhile the overarching story is told, not shown.
The actors are phenomenal per usual, and I think their talent carries the show. I am entertained and I do want to see where this goes, but I think the show runners heard โgrittyโ and thought it meant graphic violence. Gritty is also a storytelling style and tone. This show feels a lot more manicured and there are some editing cuts that feel so forced they take me out of the show.
