There were moments that drifted into satirise without, I think, intending to. Joaquin’s performance was flat. It’s baffling how they could make the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars boring… but they managed to do it. Maybe that’s worthy of an award.

Love the absurdism of this film. It mangled together all these old school American cinema tropes - simultaneously revering and subverting them. It comedically explores the peculiar paranoia that persisted at the time, American-imperialism, in an off-beat and at arms length way creating a subtext that provides a sense of gravitas to its observations, making them somewhat relevant to the present.
